Choose fibre – save nature™. Moulded fibre packaging has very little impact on the environment. It is a highly efficient use of a renewable resource: Advanced and environmentally conscious production, few additives and a raw material that would have to be disposed of – if we did not put it into good use.
STEPs towards sustainability
Hartmann has developed a management model that provides an operational structure for our efforts: Sustainability Tools for the Entire Product-chain. The STEP® model is used within the field of environmental and human progress.
For this systematic approach Hartmann was awarded The European Commission’s Management Award for Sustainable Development. The real reward of our efforts is however the continuous improvements generated by applying the methodology of the STEP® model.

22% energy reduction achieved
In 2007 Hartmann endorsed the United Nations “Caring for Climate” charter and set an ambitious target of reducing energy consumption by 20% per kg product by the end of 2011 relative to the 2007 consumption level. With a 22% reduction we have outperformed that target in 2011.
This major achievement is a result of a committed effort within the following six focus areas:
• Investments in new process technology
• Maintenance, improvement and optimization of existing equipment
• Training of staff
• Knowledge sharing
• Developing best practices across the Group
• Involving experts
Looking ahead energy and CO2 reductions will be retained as key focus areas in Hartmann. During 2012 we will continue to implement energy improvements while simultaneously investigating the remaining reduction potential. By 2013 we will set a new target for the period 2013-2020. Elements that will be investigated to determine Hartmann’s reduction potential include:
• Internal waste reduction potential
• Potential for further optimizing current assets
• Possible energy reduction investments
• Potential to replace fossil energy by renewable energy

Our way of thinking
Good environmental performance in the production process has little value if the product causes more pollution in other phases of its life cycle. Our company is dedicated to life cycle management.
Not only do we manage and optimise our own performance – we also work closely with the other companies in the product chain. An important part of this work is our 10 sustainability principles, which acts like a code of conduct for our corporation.
